According to the CDC Growth Charts (2000), a boy exactly 13 years old at the median — the 50th percentile — measures 5 ft 1.6 in (156.4 cm), and a girl the same age measures 5 ft 1.9 in (157.3 cm). "Average" here means the median of the U.S. reference population, not a target.

Thirteen is the age where same-team height differences are often at their most dramatic. The reference curves put the median girl at about 96% of the age-20 reference median for girls, while the median boy sits at about 88% of his — and this is the boys' single fastest reference year, about 3.0 inches of median change. The middle 90% of boys spans roughly 10 inches. A locker room of 13-year-olds is a snapshot of very different timetables, not a ranking.

How much does the reference median move in a year?

In the reference population, the median rises about 3.0 inches for boys and 1.2 inches for girls between 13 and 14 — but individual kids move through that change on very different schedules. A single measurement is a snapshot; the record of measured change over time is what actually shows how your athlete is developing.

What height is considered tall for a 13-year-old?

Why is the range so wide at 13?

Kids the same age can be at very different points in their development, and both the timing and the pace vary widely from child to child — at 13, those timing differences are near their most visible. Pediatricians look at the pattern across visits rather than any single number, and everything from the 5th to the 95th percentile is generally considered typical.

Is average height different for young athletes?

These are population-wide reference values, not athlete-specific ones. Sports differ in the body types they reward, and at 13 the differences you see on a field are driven mostly by developmental timing. What tells you far more than any single comparison is the same measurement repeated over a season.
